PET scan & Joseph

Today Sarah had a PET scan to evaluate how well the chemo is working.  Grandma brought her to Faxton for the test this am.  The scan takes about 1.5 hours all together and you can't eat for 6 hours before so needless to say Sarah was a little hungry after this one.  Apparently she ate very well when Grandma brought her out to lunch afterwards.  Christine, Neil, Mary, Grandma, Aunt Lisa, Uncle David and William went to the Stanley Theater tonight to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.  If any of you know Mary you know that this was her favorite movie as a child.  It was an "Amazing" show.

Carrier Dome visit

Our LF girls basketball seniors went to the Dome today for a Captains luncheon with their amazing coach Pam Munger.  They will play there on Friday at 5pm.  Because they are the "home team" they get to use the SU locker room which they got a tour of today and just seeing the players lockers was exciting for them.  What a great opportunity for such an awesome group of girls.  They truly have something special going on.

Battle Like Bruins Pix

Aunt Monica and Uncle Jan bring the battle to California!!!
1st up JP (Jennifer Pidgeon) at UNC Wilmington.

Another Battle shirt sighting, this one is in Titusville Florida on our awesome neighbor Kathy Mocko.

Check out these great pictures from the Dean Family in Antwerp, NY (that's way up north)

Here is a great picture of one of our family's American Hero's.  Our Cousin Chris is a Navy pilot and he is, as he puts it "Battling on the flight line in Florida.

Helping Sarah "Battle" at the SU Carrier Dome

Uncle Frank and Aunt Cookie, Cape Cod joins the battle!!

This picture is very special.  My amazing cousin Kristen (on the left) and her friends at their 1st half marathon of the season sporting the Battle shirts.  The best thing about this one is that Kristen is a breast cancer survivor and an inspiration to us all.

Dr Sperling is our favorite surgeon and he has taken such good care of our Sarah during her battle.

Hold on tight Joanna and battle that bull!!!

Cousins Michael and Bridget taking a "dive" for Bruins in Wisconsin.

More support from LF Mountie friend Abby Blanchard

My best friend since high school, Kristine and her daughter (my Goddaughter) Katie who is a Rotary Exchange student this year in Belgium.  This is taken at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany while they are traveling.  So the Battle has made it to Europe!!

And here they are in Verona, Italy.  The home of Romeo and Juliet.

Uncle Mike (High Point North Carolina) wore his shirt to play Hockey in and he scored 2 goals so the Battle shirt brought him some luck.

Grandma and Grandpa Bruins sporting their Battle shirts in High Point North Carolina also.

Here are cousins Sierra and Sydney in Florida sending some "horsepower" for Sarah's battle.

Aunt Diane Bruins and cousins Joelle & Brian, Brianne & Mark Easter weekend in PA.

Cousins Erin and Jim supporting Sarah from Wisconsin on Easter weekend. We have such fantastic family and friends on our side.  Love you all.

Our favorite son/brother Andreas and his twin brother Thomas bringing the battle to Austria.  We are so excited for Andreas to come "home" in August. (Andreas is on the left in the shorts)

1/3rd done

Wednesday February 19th was chemo treatment # 4.  This week is winter break so Derek was able to come along again.  He has done a good job of helping pass the time. We also had Neil and Elizabeth along this time so we were happy to have one of the private rooms.  Elizabeth had to catch a train back to Buffalo so we brought her along and Neil took her to the train station about halfway through Sarah's treatment.  Sarah's blood work all came back very stable from the last 3 treatments.  We mentioned to Dr. DeTraglia's  nurse practitioner about the trouble Sarah has been having after chemo with her eyes being dry, itchy and swollen and she gave her a new eye drop that has been working really well so far.  After her chemo on Wednesday Sarah was able to play in her basketball team's sectional game against Waterville.  She said that she would be OK to play as long as she didn't take a nap after the chemo because once she falls asleep she doesn't wake up for a long time.  When we walked into the Little Falls HS gym for the game the entire Waterville team had Sarah's shirts on, it was so amazing to see.  Even though they were wearing the shirts we are happy to say that our Little Falls girls went on to win the game so now they will play in the semifinal game at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse on Sunday.  They will play against Cooperstown, a team that they have beaten twice this season but it will be a tough game.  Cooperstown is also the team that beat them last year in the semi finals so we are hoping for a better outcome this year.  Neil and I want these girls to keep playing as long as possible because they are such an amazing group of girls and they have been so supportive of Sarah through everything.  Not only are they great athletes but they are great friends and we really have come to love each of them.  So keep your fingers crossed and pray that they win on Sunday and can play the next game at The Dome at SU.

Elizabeth came home for the long President's day weekend.  She had Monday and Tuesday off but was unable to get a train out on Tuesday because of mechanical problems so she was able to stay an extra day.  She made it back to school on Wednesday without difficulty.  Mary has been enjoying her winter break by sleeping and sleeping and more sleeping.  Sometimes she gets up to watch netflix or to eat but mostly she has been sleeping.

So up next for Sarah is another PET scan before her next chemo which will tell us how the chemo is working.  Keep the prayers coming so that the scan gives us good news that we are getting closer to being done and having our healthy, crazy girl back.  Thank you all so much for the prayers and positive thoughts. We are sure that it all works because God is good.  Thank you also to cousins Sara, Sierra and Sydney for the beautiful blanket that kept her cozy during this weeks treatment.

Sectionals

Yesterday the LF girls and boys basketball teams had their 1st sectional games at home in LF and both won.  Sarah was able to play and she was so happy to be a part of the win and not just the mascot.  They play again on Wednesday night which will be after her 4th chemo treatment so we aren't too sure how she will feel about playing.  She may still be OK on Friday night to play but we'll just have to see.  Elizabeth came home Friday for a long weekend, it's good to have all of our girls in the house. Check out the picture that Neil's brother Derik sent of his triplets.  They are too cute!!

Busy Week

Well this has been an amazing week.  Sarah is feeling better from her chemo last
Wednesday.  It usually takes from Wednesday to Sunday or Monday for her to wake up.  She has also been having issues with facial and eye redness and swelling after the chemo treatments. Each time it has gotten worse so we will have to ask her oncologist what can be done to help her with this.  We were able to get permission from her surgeon for her to play a couple minutes of her senior recognition game yesterday (2/10). So we came up with a very protective dressing to cover her port which must have convinced Dr. Sperling (more likely it was the begging he is probably sick of hearing from Missy Petrie and Sarah) to allow her to play during sectionals.  Both Mary's JV basketball team and Sarah's Varsity basketball team had fantastic regular season records this year.  JV went 17-1 and Varsity had a perfect 18-0 season and they are heading to sectionals and hopefully beyond.  Neil and I are so humbled by all of the fantastic support we have gotten from so many people in our little Upstate New York.  Not only from our own family and friends but from so many people that we don't even know.  It is also so awesome the support that Sarah (and our family) has gotten from the many school districts in our area.  It is nice to see that our kids can play hard against each other on the basketball courts and athletic fields but can also come together and support a competitor when she is in need.  There is no way that we will ever be able to thank everyone properly but hopefully the word will get around that we are feeling very blessed by the support and prayers of so many.

On to other news now, Mary is done with basketball as of today and she has already started right in on her next adventure which is being part of the stage crew for the Little Falls High School's production of Damn Yankees.  It won't be long before she will be starting practices for the spring track and field season.  Elizabeth will be coming home on Friday for a long weekend.  Her next adventure will be going to Germany for 3 weeks this summer for a course in German and cultural studies.  She is in her 2nd semester of German classes and is looking forward to being able to put her knowledge into practice.  Neil and I are just trying to keep up with it all.  It's hard to believe that in just over 2 years all of our girls will be in college and we will be empty nesters. OK enough of that nonsense.
